New School
He takes the shirt from the cart and hangs it back on the rack. “Green,” he says. “I like the green one.”
His mom shakes her head. “It has to be blue,” she tells him. “Rules are rules.”
She holds a blue tee up to his small chest and smiles. “Nice! It suits you.”
She takes five blue shirts, all the same, puts them in the cart, and then turns to look at pants. “Can you help me find your size?” she asks. “We need five pairs.”
He waves his hand at the row of slacks, not pale, like the shirts, but still blue. “I love green,” he says. “I don't love blue. I don’t like it at all. And I don’t think I’ll like this new school.”
“The list says blue shirts and blue pants, bub. Load ‘em up.”
They walk to the front of the store, their cart full of blue clothes. She looks at her son and sighs. “Hold on,” she says. “You need shoes. Left turn.”
He moves in front of the cart and makes the turn. He takes a pair of blue Chucks from the shelf, shrugs, and dumps them in the cart. She holds up a pair of bright green sneaks and swings them back and forth. “The list just says ‘court shoes,’” she tells him. “It does not say they need to be blue.”
“I love you!” he says, his face bright for the first time all day.
“As much as green?” she asks, and he laughs.
“A bit more,” he says, and then he takes her hand and grins. “A lot more.”
You wouldn’t like it if someone stole your words, so please don’t steal the work of photographers and graphic artists to provide images for your blog. Today’s image courtesy of morgueFile, which offers lots of wonderful, free images for public use.
